General Secretariat organises workshop on biodiversity data

​The Department of Environmental Affairs and Meteorology, within the Economic Affairs Sector and serving as the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs, recently organised a workshop on biodiversity data. Held in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) - West Asia Office and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), the workshop took place from 6 to 8 May 2024, in Amman, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian Media

​In accordance with Resolution 508 of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, dated 22 September 2022, during its 52nd session held in Cairo, 11 May has been designated as a day of global solidarity with Palestinian media. The date coincides with the anniversary of the Israeli occupation forces' assassination of journalist Sherine Abu Aqla while she was carrying out her journalistic duties with the Al Jazeera media network channel.

​Dr. Said Abu Ali, Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Affairs at the League of Arab States, met with His Excellency Ambassador François Cornett, the Ambassador of Belgium to the Arab Republic of Egypt. The meeting centred on the latest developments concerning the Palestinian cause, particularly the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, notably the genocide, destruction, and infliction of hunger taking place in the Gaza Strip.

​The Legal Affairs Department is set to convene the second meeting of the joint committee comprising experts and representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Interior, and relevant authorities in member states. The purpose of this gathering is to deliberate on the "Draft Arab Guidance Law for the Protection of Internally Displaced Persons in Arab Countries." The meeting is scheduled to take place on 8-9 May at the headquarters of the League of Arab States, commencing at 10 am, Cairo time.

General Secretariat convenes fifth Conference of States Parties to the Arab Anti-Corruption Convention

​The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, represented by the Legal Affairs Sector and Legal Affairs Department, convened the fifth session of the Conference of States Parties to the Arab Anti-Corruption Convention. The conference was jointly organised at the invitation of the Palestinian Anti-Corruption Commission and in close coordination and consultation with the Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which currently presides over the Fourth Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Arab Anti-Corruption Convention.

​Arab Fund for Technical Assistance to African Countries organises training course in Saudi Arabia for African diplomats

The Prince Saud Al-Faisal Institute for Diplomatic Studies in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, commenced a training course on 5 May tailored for 31 African diplomats representing various African diplomatic missions in Riyadh.
This course, facilitated by senior officials from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spans five days, from 5 to 9 May 2024, and encompasses a range of crucial topics. These include the foreign policy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its significance to African nations, insights into Vision 2030 and the opportunities it presents for African countries, protocols in diplomatic practice, diplomatic etiquette, tact, courtesy, and cybersecurity.


General Secretariat organises side event to discuss obstacles to developing International Conference on Population and Development agenda

​The General Secretariat's Social Affairs Sector, the Population Policy Department, serving as the Technical Secretariat of the Arab Council for Population and Development, organised a side event on 1 May at the United Nations headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the 57th session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development. The event was held in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.

​The international community observes World Press Freedom Day on 3 May, a day established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in December 1993, following a recommendation from the General Conference of UNESCO. In 2024, this day is commemorated under the theme "Journalism for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis," highlighting the escalating risks of climate change and the urgent need to safeguard global biodiversity.
